Writing film reviews is one of the tasks required to complete at colleges and universities. Although watching a film is a favorite activity of most people, film reviews writing is an activity that requires patience, diligence and knowledge of elements every movie is composed of. Therefore, how to write a film review? You should know that every paper consists of several parts: introduction, main body, and conclusion. Besides, a title page, table of contents, and list of sources organized in accordance with one of citation styles (APA, MLA, harvard, turabian, oxford, etc.) are usually necessary to include into your work. However, if you use MLA citation style, a title page may not be required. Short papers may contain information organized in paragraphs without headings and table of contents.
As for the paper content, film reviews refer to a specific type of papers that usually include information on the movie, its director, actors and actresses, genre, year, title of the film, music, editing, etc. This data can be presented in the first paragraph of your reviews so that the reader receives basic information on the film you are going to write about.
The next paragraph may contain information on the movie plot, whether it has been invented by the director or it has been shot based on a novel. In the second case some interesting details about the author of the book are required. Besides, you should mention if there are some differences between movie and book. This part of film reviews should include background information on the country, society norms, people and time in the history; place of the action; genre (comedy, drama, horror, etc.). The use of language, as well as order of events (chronological or flash back) should be analyzed.
The third section of your film reviews should be devoted to the discussion of major characters: their physical and mental condition, age, social background and so on. Please note that you should concentrate on main characters here. It is better to choose two or three characters for a detailed analysis.
The following part is not obligatory for movie reviews, though it can be included to show how well you know all the details of movie structure. Vocabulary used by characters in the film contains some meaning, usually symbols are used in films or some sentences, phrases, and even words are repeated throughout the paper to emphasize important information.
The last, but not the least part, is conclusion. In this section of your film reviews you should summarize all the information presented in the paper in general. Only the most significant facts and details are included in this paragraph. Moreover, you should state what is the message of the movie, director’s intention and your personal opinion formed on the basis of the researched materials.
